Gaza settlers use bees to treat arthritis, MS

Settlers in Gaza City are relying on the ancient practice of apitherapy--or the medicinal use of bee venom--to treat pain related to a number of conditions, including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Since the Islamist Hamas seized power in 2007, the settlers in this area have been cut off from seeking medical care outside their region. This has caused pain sufferers to seek relief through bee stings, a treatment that patients swear relieves their symptoms. Bee venom contains large amounts of the anti-inflammatory agent melittin, though there is little experimental evidence to support its effectiveness.  Read full story >
