Democrats demand info on sudden drug price hikes

Two senior Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have demanded a government investigation into a recent estimated nine percent increase in the prices of some of the most commonly used brand-name prescription drugs. Charles Rangel and Henry Waxman, the respective chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee, are seeking the investigation, saying they believe drugmakers are artificially raising prices in expectation of forthcoming healthcare reform measures. In their letter to the Government Accountability Office, the congressmen said: "Any price gouging is unacceptable, but anticipatory price gouging is especially offensive."   Read full story >
