Close Relationships Ease Inflammation in Women with RA: Study

According to a new study published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research, women who have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and who also have close relationships that are based on the reciprocal sharing of thoughts and feelings have lower levels of inflammation. Scientists say this aspect of relationships--called "mutuality"--accounted for a 9 percent reduction in inflammation among female RA patients, even after researchers controlled for factors such as severity of disease and use of anti-inflammatory and disease-modifying drugs.
