Knee Replacements Good for Knees, Bad for Weight

New research published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage suggests that though knee replacement surgery helps improve mobility in patients who have the procedure, it also leads to weight gain. In the study, researchers compared knee replacement surgery patients to a control group that did not have the procedure or knee pain. The researchers found that people who had undergone knee replacement gained an average of 14 pounds over the study period even though their mobility increased after the surgery, while the control group showed little weight change. The researchers say this finding suggests that high body weight should be treated as a separate issue from mobility problems.
