'Tattletale' Pills Remind People to Take Meds

A high-tech product that can tell patients if they need to take their medications--or if they've taken them already--may be on the horizon, researchers say. Hair-thin microchips can be inserted into pills, the scientists say, and these chips would then transmit information wirelessly in much the same way as cell phone signals. Patients, doctors, or loved ones can receive this wireless information, letting them know that drugs have been taken as prescribed. Though researchers admit this may sound invasive, it also has the potential to save as much as $290 billion annually, the amount lost every year because of people not taking medications as prescribed.  Read full story >
