Rheumatic Arthritis Harder on Blacks, Hispanics: Study

New research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has found blacks and Hispanics suffer more pain and disability from osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), lupus, gout, and fibromyalgia. Investigators say one reason for this finding is that blacks and Hispanics are more likely to get the more severe forms of rheumatic arthritis such as RA and lupus. The researchers also found that Native Americans and Alaska Natives had the highest rates of arthritis, likely due to higher rates of obesity and other risk factors for OA.
