Custom Running Shoes May Not Help Prevent Injuries

Wearing running shoes that have been custom-made to your foot shape may not protect you from injuries, a new study suggests. In the study of New Balance tailored shoes, scientists looked at the online tools consumers can use to determine their foot shape--called "pronation"--before selecting running shoes to purchase. They found that this tool did not provide enough information to accurately prescribe shoe types to wearers. The investigators also tested a group of male and female Marine recruits, giving the study participants shoes that fit their level of pronation. At the end of the study, they found little difference in the rate of injuries, regardless of which type of shoe the recruits wore.
