FDA Panels Reject Plan to Curb Narcotic Painkiller Abuse

Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) presented the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS), a proposal designed to curb the abuse of extended-release, long-acting opioid drugs. But this week, two expert panels that advise the FDA voted against the proposal because they objected to some features in the plan. The main stumbling block appeared to center around the plan's lack of a requirement that doctors who prescribe these medications go through a training program. FDA officials said they did not include this requirement because they said it would be too much for the agency to manage.  Read full story >
