Care After Joint Surgery May Affect Heart Health

French researchers say the quality of care patients receive right after having orthopedic surgery may have a major impact on their long-term heart health. In the study, scientists measured levels of troponin in joint-replacement patients. Troponin is a protein whose levels determine whether physiological stress related to surgery has caused damage to the heart. When the scientists modified postoperative care to reduce events believed to lead to elevated troponin levels, they found that the incidence of cardiac problems fell in these patients as well.  Read full story >
