Arthritis More Likely in Outward-Facing Knees: Study

People who have knees that point outward may have a higher risk of developing osteoarthritis (OA), researchers say. This type of alignment, known as varus alignment, resembles bowleggedness, though it's not that extreme. In a new study, scientists found that people with the varus alignment in their knees were 1.5 times more likely to develop OA than those who had a straight-legged stance. People whose knees face inward (called valgus alignment) did not share this increased arthritis risk.
