Support for Canvas the Film

Robin Cunningham Health Guide

You may recall that several months ago I reviewed the movie Canvas in one of my blogs. You can find this in archives by selecting the option to see all my blogs. It will appear as "Canvas: A Movie with Many Dimensions, posted on Monday, July 2, 2007. or just click on the following -

Canvas is beyond a doubt the best movie I've seen about what schizophrenia is really like for the consumer and their family. The movie is NOT a documentary, but very good entertainment with accompanying educational values. It's unusually well crafted for viewing by the general public, staring Golden Globe winner Joe Pantoliano (the Sopranos') and Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden. The movie has received awards at numerous film festivals around the country.

I believe national distribution of the film could be a seminal event in the fight against stigma. Providing support for one or more of the film's initial limited openings will help ensure that it will eventually be seen widely by general public.

I also think everyone in the country with schizophrenia, or schizophrenia in their family, ought to have an opportunity to see this film.

Canvas has a limited opening (New York & Chicago on 10/12/07 and Los Angeles & Scottsdale on 10/19/07). If a sufficient number of tickets are sold for these initial screenings, the movie may be able to get a national distribution contract. As I understand it, the availability of a national distribution contract will be contingent on the dollars these four screenings bring in, not the number of persons actually in attendance. So, if you would like to support one or more these initial screenings with the expectation that this will enable the film to obtain a national distribution contract and will then, eventually, be shown in your home town, you don't have to actually attend any of these initial showings. You just need to buy a ticket for one or more of them. Tickets are $7.00 and will be available for purchase online. The film's website is If you sign on this website and register by leaving your e-mail address, you will be notified when tickets go on sale. Then you can go back online and make your purchase.

I urge you to provide support for Canvas by buying one or more tickets to one of its initial limited screenings. We need all the help we can get in fighting stigma.
