Marijuana Use and Schizophrenia: The Missing Link

By Christina Bruni, Health Guide Sunday, August 29, 2010
This SharePost is titled the Missing Link because in reality there could be no link between marijuana use and developing schizophrenia. Critics contend that if there was a link the number of people diagnosed with schizophrenia would have risen along with the increase in the use of marijuana over the...

Your title "missing link" was timely.  But I think it's been found.    There have been a lot of studies that have virtually proven, as you stated, that marijuana is a no-no for people with schizophrenia.       Dr. Phillip Long, a prominent Canadian psychiatrist has said that again, as you stated, that marijuana use can often precede an onset of schizophrenia.

In the Early Intervention series of lectures that I give at high schools and colleges here in Nanaimo, the subject is debated for quite a while each term.      The only conclusive evidence we can give the students is that marijuana use does not cause schizophrenia, but can be a precipitating factor or stressor that, combined with other factors, may lead to the onset of the illness.

It was interesting, as about a year or so ago, I read on this site, that an Australian study had located a gene that was similar to cannabis that was unusually prevalent in people with schizophrenia.

Happy Summer !

Ok they Claim that skunk weed is worse @ causing the disorder now they are saying that the two does never coincide how odd, oh well I do know that THC in pot sometimes will make people paranoid and met one person who smoked pot then had to be put into the hospital to get put on meds-DAYS AFTER SHE SMOKED! For Schizophrenia maybe that was a coincidence however, that still makes me wander because one website says one thing and another, well another thing-how oddSmileBE HAPPY

Thank you for commenting.

It is true the THC in pot can make people paranoid that is unquestionable.

And you're right: I wouldn't risk smoking pot even if I didn't have the SZ, because as you see from my example it even fries the brains of so-called normal people.

With the prescence of a genetic risk or other factors, smoking marijuana is certainly not advised.

Christina

Hello Christina, being honest with myself and my illness, I am sure that way before I ever puffed on mary jane, I had symptoms. I have since come to stay with the abstinence of all drugs and alcohol and even cigarettes. Instead, i stay with my meds and my therapies and a calm, easy routine day. Have a blessed day.
