By Christina Bruni, Health Guide Wednesday, September 08, 2010
The question of the month for September is: What role does technology play in your recovery?   I'm interested in hearing whether any of you have used the MoodTracker featured in the banner at the top of the page whereby you can track your mood each day by entering them into your cell phone. &...

As someone who is going to publish her memoir in 2012: I created an author web site three years ago in advance of this goal. On the Christina Bruni Web site you can read my published articles and even hear an audio file where I read from the memoir.

I have created a Facebook fan page to promote my books and I keep a blog and have a Twitter account.  Only I so rarely Twitter.  Also I have a personal Facebook account that I so rarely go on and I'm amazed that people even use Facebook every week or every day to communicate.

One thing I've heard other people do is that they set an alarm with a different tone on their cell phone to ring to remind them when to take their medication.  I do have my psychiatrist's phone number programmed into the contacts list on my cell phone.

Do I text? No. I joined a friendship network and was sent the name and phone number of a guy to meet so I left a message on his voice mail.  He called me back an hour later and we spoke for 20 minutes.  I said, "So do you want to meet?" and he said "How about we text?"

Now: I told him I rarely use my cell phone.  He told me to e-mail him instead, which I did and he responded and asked me some questions.  I answered his questions and awaited a reply.  And waited.  And waited.  Two weeks later there was no response from him.

First of all I thought it was the height of strange to join a networking service to meet people and: your first response is to screen people out?  I was willing to meet him in person before I would decide whether to continue.

I realize I was six years older than him however I doubt my age had anything to do with the fact that I don't see how texting can be a great way to get to know someone.  not unless ur kewl.  I don't text, I don't use computer shorthand when I write or talk to people either.  Is this what relationships have evolved or devolved into?

My favorite way of communicating is the original method: telephone.  I like to talk to friends on the phone.  I go out socially with friends twice a month too.

So I wonder: what place does technology have in your recovery?

This is the way I see it.

Peace,

Christina

Hi Christina,

Computers are a big part of my daily routine and helps keep my mind from drifting.  Posting on here as often as possible and reading the supportive feedback helps me stay focused and confident about where I am in life today.

I am on a computer all day at work corresponding with our potential clients through e-mail and calls along with providing technical support when needed.  I also manage our current customers accounts.  I try to stay as busy as possible.

Work (the type of industry that we are in: http://www.anonymizer.com) has helped me so much in my recovery.  If it weren't for my job, I would be stuck in my head in a whirlwind of anxiety, and delusional thoughts.  The services that we provide are very exciting.

I guess the weight equipment in the gym qualifies since the machines are continuously evolving.  And, the gadgets used to measure BMI and body fat is another form of technology.

Rarely do I text, only my best friend. I have a phone application that tracks the time that I have been sober.  Looking at the results as often as possible helps me stay positive when the negative thoughts begin to creep up on me.

I don't watch TV unless the Redskins are playing. Listening to Pandora and Slacker online helps me stay relaxed and grounded. I love R&B and also like to dance.

Writing shareposts and blogs has helped me a great deal. I am this point in my life due to blogging. I first started 3 or 4 years ago. At that time I was extremely wrapped up in my "illness blanket" wanting to find common ground with fellow sufferers. The more I blogged the better I began to feel about myself.

When I decided to take action against the voices, they began to disappear. I fought off the voices online..I had tried almost every med known and many ECT's..to no avail. By writing and making positive steps to conqueor the voices the less I heard them. I hear voices maybe an half hour total in a day..compared to hearing them ALL day.

I use my cell phone as my primary number. I do have a land line but rarely use it. My work in the church is the reason I use my cell more. There are times when I am out and someone may need something from me. My cell also helps in the early mornings as to not wake up Margaret. When we got my cell the associate asked what I wanted a cell for...I said "To talk!!" He asked "you don't want to text?" I said "I can barely figure out how to add addresses!" I don't see the allure of texting. I like to talk directly and not through texting. I don't like the abbrevations... I have no idea what they are..I had to ask what LOL meant!!

The internet has been my saving grace. I received so much feedback. I now give back to the online communities. My self-esteem has grown stronger. I am more confidant then I ever.

I also have started a journal ..a handwritten journal. I write my private thoughts that need attention, but not publically.

Whether I write online or in private...journaling has been a wonderful tool in my recovery...not just from SZA but in life

Technology, most particularly computers, has opened a new world for me and has been very therapeutic for me.    I remember how thrilling it was to get  my first e-mail address in 2001.   I spend a lot of time at the computer, it occupies a good part of my day.     In 2008 I took a couple of online courses in computer tech and passed them both.

I don't own a cell phone, so I wouldn't know anything about the world of texting. Maybe that's good.           That robot Emma sounds great but can she cook ?           But seriously, I have a lot of my sanity back thanks to computers and I don't think they'll go out of style anytime soon.     Aside from writing and music, I can e-mail any of my loving relatives anytime I like.

All in all, I would have to say that technology has been a big plus for me in my recovery from schizophrenia.

happy trails
