CBT was initially not successful, when I was at my worst symptom-wise and mood-wise.  But later when I was able to formulate goals, like gaining my independence and renting an apartment on my own, I found it very helpful.  My therapist was a no-nonsense but good-humored guide to the tenets of CBT.  She very quickly introduced me to the connections between thoughts, feelings, and actions and I was able to reach my immediate goals within 6 sessions.  After that, I could use the techniques she tought me to examine how I was approaching my goals and keep on the right track.

I don't think my mother has ever had this type of therapy.  I wonder if it would have helped.  It does sound like it could be beneficial for teaching certain types of skills. I am glad you are talking about it.
