I wanted to make the observation that any drug rehab counselor should assess as part of the intake whether the client who is presenting a drug addiction might also have a mental illness and be self-medicating.
I know someone who I believe had an undiagnosed mental illness since he was 19 and he wasn't diagnosed until nearly two decades later.
And a significant number of people diagnosed with SZ use street drugs. People with bipolar also could have a co-occrring substance abuse problem.
This proves that early-and better yet- *immediate* intervention at the onset of the symptoms of a mental illness offers the person the best chance at resuming a normal life.
You can recover.
