The importance of taking your medication

By Janet Wednesday, January 02, 2008

As the New Year is upon us I have decided to write a share post on the importance of taking medications as prescribed and to let your doctor know about any side effects.

I come to realize that some folks might not like the idea of taking medications as prescribed by their doctors and the reasons may vary. Even if a person is doing extremely well it is not advisable to stop taking any medications without first consulting your doctor. Also if you feel a medicine is not working properly or the side effects are to much to handle one must be honest with their doctor. One must keep in mind many medications can take up to two weeks to work to their full benefit so a person must demonstrate some patience. However if a certain side effects is adversely affecting one's life you must let your doctor aware of this problem right away. I do not want to discourage anyone but sometimes it may take a few different medcations before one's doctor finds the most suitable medicine for you.

hope to go back to work real soon.

Janet:

I couldn't agree with you more.  Medication is what makes recovery possible.  When I got sick there was only one medication and it didn't work very well for me.  While your looking for that combination of medicines that works best for you, you can be practicing your coping skills.  While medicines make recovery possible, it is your coping skills that make recovery a reality.  They're two side of the same coin.

Also, I firmly believe it takes a great deal of courage to take the meds, to continue to battle schizophrenia in all its forms.  I applaud my own courage and that of others for facing the daunting task of rebuilding their lives...every day.

I agree that taking your meds is very, very important. It is equally important to tell your pdoc about side affects. I've recently been placed on two different meds. I'm having some adverse side affects. I told my pdoc today. He said that it would take a couple of weeks for the meds to start working properly.
