Help My Sister Please

By nabeel101 Saturday, May 23, 2009

Hello Everyone,

I am from Pakistan. I am Living in Lahore. My family consists of 7 members My Father, Mother, Myself and my Four Sisters.

Actually one of my sister is suffering from schizophrenia from last 2 - 3 years. Symptoms are exactly the same. She also complains about hallucination. She hears some strange voices. She even complains that somebody is around her. She has no more interest in her studies and any other activities. She is a student of M.SC (Environmental Science).

The reason I feel behind her illness is that our parents have been quarreling for almost last 10 years. There is not even a single day when they don't fight with each other. I have asked my parents several times not fight in front of her at least but they don't worry about us. I always try to be with my sister but it does not work. She is always disturbed. She also failed in her mid term exams if she is failed again then she will also be dropped out from her university.

She always wants to sleep. When ever she is upset she just goes to her bed cry a little and then sleeps. I have visited several doctors but it's of no use. I am extremely worried about her please guide me what should I do for my sister. I really love her a lot and I can't see her in pain.

Waiting for your help if you need any further information let me know I will provide it to you.

A worried Brother

Best Regards

Thanks

Hello,

I am sorry to hear your sister is in distress and I understand how feel about wanting to help her.  I would feel the same way if my brother got sick.

Now, I am concerned about your comment: "I have visited doctors and it's no use."

Do you mean they don't prescribe any medication, or that your sister refuses to take the medication they prescribe?

For the best outcome, if your sister does have schizophrenia, she will need life-long mangement of her symptoms with medication and therapy.

Is it possible in Lahore to get her involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital, that is, where she is forced into the hospital and given medication?  You may have to take this option.

Feel free to write back and give us more information.

Your sister will need blood work and an evaluation by a doctor, to rule out or confirm schizophrenia, depression with psychotic features, schizoaffective or any other medical condition that could be causing her symptoms.

Sometimes, the diagnosis changes over time.  The main thing is to get her into treatment as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

Christina

Hi Mam,

First of all I am extremely grateful to you for your prompt reply.

The answer of your first question is Doctors have prescribed her some medicines and she is surely taking it. As I myself and my elder sisters give her medicines. But even then its not working as it should work in my opinion. I will also provide you the names of medicines if you need it.

Doctors have confirmed that she is suffering from schizophrenia.

I will surely discuss your options with my elder sisters they will be elated to know that you are helping us in such a nice way. For the time being can you tell me any sort of Mental excercise so that she can get relaxed. Or any sort of activity that may keeps her busy and can intrestingly do that specific work. As I have already told you that she has droped her interest in every activity.

Thanks once again for your reply and for helping a helpless brother.

God Bless you

Best Regards

Nabeel

Hello,

Your sister may not need to be hospitalized if she's taking the medication as prescribed and it's not working.  The doctor should try every medication currently available to see if one drug will work better than the one she's on now.

I suggest drawing or painting as an activity.  It calms my mind and distracts me from my worry when I'm painting and focused on the details of the artwork.  So maybe this kind of hobby would help your sister.

Regards,

Christina

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. Well your suggestions sounds really nice. I am worried about one more thing that is my sister wants to sleep alot. When ever she is sad she wants to sleep. Even when she has nothing to do she wants to sleep. tell me is that normal? What should I do to keep her awaken?

Thanks once again

Best Regards

Hello, It is obvious that her med is too high, they need to cut down her amount of meds slowly till they get on the right dosage. That is why she is so sleepy all the time, it is a matter of her dealing with the illness and coping with the illness and the med, so that she is not sedated all the time.

Hi nabeel

I know what you mean by your parents arguing all the time and how this would make this things difficult for you specially if you feel they do not care how it is affecting you. May be they don't understand it.  So may be you should explain it to your parents or atleast one of them the seriousness of schitzophrenia.  Do your research and tell them how serious it can get (Almost try to scare them to make them see how it is more serious than their arguments). However, be aware that it might not work as it dint work with my parents.  I was in exactly the same position as you but you can't choose your parents,, unfortunately so just learn to control them.

Now with regards to your sister, you clearly care for her and love her.  How long has she been showing the symptons for? or how long has she had the hallucinations for? and when she sleeps, does she actually sleeps or does she just lie down and think about things?  you could mention the medication aswel but i m not sure if the medications in pakistan are different to the ones in uk.

Finally, try not to put too much pressure on yourself, you can not change everything but you can support her.  you will support her best if you are less stressed.  how old are you now? I believe this is something from god or beyond our control and alot of people live with this disease.
