winter's love

By earlyriser Saturday, November 20, 2010

I live in a small city in upstate NY. This time of year its gray and brown and kinda sad. I don't get to the woods enough. (John you are amazing!) I learn from nature. Like the two trees where one is leaning on another. I seem to remember that trees share with each other. Not sure if that's true. It sounds cool that they look out for each other.

I am amazed at how trees can grow through the rocky side of a mountain and grow straight up.

On the side of our house by the driveway, we have a rose bush. This is not a "normal" plant. Every year it blossoms in November. All the trees are brown and gray yet here is this beautiful flower. This gives me hope. Hope that no matter how gray my mood can get it, it can flower into something wonderful. (I took a pic and will upload it and re-size it). My profile pic is my November rose.

I did an experiment the other day. I always say that Wal-Mart greeters are selective as to who they greet. Almost every store I go to doesn't have good customer service. So I dressed up in a suit and tie and went shopping. The result was amazing. I shopped at several stores and was given the best service ever! I went to a jewelry store and I was flooded with help. Everyone called me sir and smiled. I am not writing this with pride but with amazement. I don't shop in my "church" clothes and more than likely I won't. This world judges by outward appearances. Its sad that we are judged by what we wear.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1963 "I have a dream" speech said "I have a dream where my four little children will live in a nation where they won't be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

"Do not judge lest ye be judged."

Peace.

Hi earlyriser,

I'm kind of obsessive about clothes.

In five years I want to attend school to get a diploma in Image Consulting.

I abhor the whole sweatshirt/jeans/sneakers outfits that other people find perfectly acceptable.

Though I agree with you the level of service in cut-price stores leaves a lot to be desired.  Your research project wearing the suit and tie to go shopping points to the fact that people judge us based on how we look.

Which is why I obsess about dressing well to make a good impression.

A friend says all women care about fashion yet I feel that's a stereotype.  Some people get dressed in the morning simply to avoid getting arrested.

It's a fascinating topic: style and its effect on us.

Personally I dislike dressing in a way I consider bummy but that other people find perfectly acceptable.

Also because I'm too darn short I have to buy petite clothes and get even petite clothes hemmed.

So I'm hyper-aware of this ethic.

My goal is to get a diploma in Image Consulting to help peers shop for interview clothes.

Cheers,

Christina
