side effect of stopping aripiprazole

By sandip538 Thursday, September 02, 2010

Hi,

My brother is suffering from Schizophernia. I consulted a psychologist in my city. He told me that he needs hypnotherapy. Apart from it you should also start giving him ARIP MT 15 MG tablet (Aripiprazole). He told me that I cant prescribe it as I am psychologist. I went to my chemist and I bought it. I started giving 1 tablet per day to my brother. Later on after 10 tablets have already been swallowed by my brother, I saw on internet that Aripiprazole drug is too risky and it should not be taken without preper supervision. So now I am tense and I want to stop the medicine for my brother but I want to know that what will happen if I suddenly stop the dose of aripiprazole?

My brother's information is :

Age - 24 years

Weight - 73 kg

Height - 5'9"

Please advise sir.

Thanks.

I have schizophrenia.      I have had it for 31 years.      Whenever I went off a certain medication and onto another it was done usually in hospital under supervision.  My symptoms are gone now and I leed a normal life and, incidentally, at no time have I ever had hypnotherapy.

I understand your fears about Aripiprazole.   The truth is that it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Admin. in 2002 for treatment of schizophrenia.     Of course every drug has side - effects and that may be what concerns you.    Aripiprazole (Abilify) is an atypical drug and has the usual concerns of all the atypical medications, which are considerably less than the older, typical drugs. Concerns about your brothers health can be addressed by having his doctor order regular blood-tests to monitor problems.      A reduction in dosage might be an easy answer too.

I hope I've been some help to you.

Hi,

Any atypical or other SZ med should be prescribed by a qualified psychiatrist who can monitor the side effects and residual symptoms and make changes in consult with the patient.

I have never heard of hypnotherapy being used to treat schizophrenia either.

You have to give the medication time to work and if after an adequate run with the Abilify there is no improvement the psychiatrist could then possibly change the dose or change the drug.

These things take time.  Recovery is not quick and it is not easy.  Your brother is young.  The most important thing is for him to be active in the life around him.  If at all possible he should go to school or work at a paid job he enjoys and if he is unable to do that he should considering working at a volunteer job.

In time he can recover.

Regards,

Christina
