I have had many professionals treat me as if I am dangerous, an idiot, intellectually disabled or just plain strange. I now have a good doctor in a private practice.    However, people who I have not disclosed to also treat me this way due to misunderstanding of my social anxiety and...

    Hi womanc,

I am sorry to hear you were taken advantage of all those times.

It is true that other people can pick up on it when someone is sensitive, unwell, or somehow different from them.

I am going to suggest that you try, as hard as it is, to assert yourself.

Remember, you just may not have found the right job yet.  And you can certainly find the right friends.  I also believe you could benefit from joining a Clubhouse to meet other people with MIs, or by joining a support group.  Contact NAMI at (800) 950-NAMI (6264) to find the phone number of the local affiliate in your city or town that offers a peer support group.  If your local NAMI doesn't have one, offer to start one for peers going through MIs.

You are not alone.  When I worked in business, I was treated poorly by one boss, and by co-workers.  It takes time to find the best kind of work that suits you, that you like to do, and can be able to do.

Reading between the lines, I get the idea that you do want to work, you want to be in relationships, you want to be treated with respect, dignity and compassion.  These things are what every human being wants and needs.

That's why I suggest you reach out to people with MIs who could hopefully relate well to what you're going through.

Again, I am sorry that you were taken advantage of.

    Regards,

    Christina
