I've been out of sorts lately the last week or so. Been doing alot of thinking. I think about mental illnesses alot. My own and others'. I wonder if I think too much about em, like an obession. It's so hard not to think about something that has touched my life for so many years. I fear I put ...

    Dave,

A dose of pride is healthy.  You're not talking arrogance, right?  Pride is the right feeling, and a good feeling when it's not puffed up to having an inflated overconfidence.

You know what you can do and what you can't do, and what is healthy to do in your recovery and not healthy to do.  That's all that matters.

Maybe you're introspective to a degree or more reflective.  That's a natural tendency and could benefit you.

By being active, a person can distract himself from the symptoms, and from the focus on mental illness.

    Cheers,

    Chris

Taking pride in yourself for overcoming or coping with challenges is a good thing David. It takes determination and hard work. It's evaluating the fruits of your efforts and saying, "Yes, I did something extraordinary!" And you have! When you share about the non-supportive, abusive family of origin that you came from and then on top of that, have a very challenging mental illness, my god David what an extraordinay man you are. Most people don't cope well from life situations like yours...so, that puts you on the top shelf. You could be bitter, angry, hate the world, but instead, you are a loving kindhearted person.  You be a shining star dude! Rock on David and keep dancin' to that cool David beat!

You bet buddy. You touch hundreds of people's lives David on this web site alone, not counting people you touch in your face to face daily contacts. Anybody with your kind of heart is a champion in my eyes but you are more so because you have overcome and cope with more challenging circumstances that the average person. Walk with your head high and "proud." Proud is a very very good word. It means you did or are doing something outstanding and you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Let's celebrate that!

And proud is a good word from another angle...I'm very proud of you!

    Have a beautiful day David.

    Dave,

Thank you for sharing so much.  I am very happy for you that you are able to cope with your illness so well and are able to enjoy life.  I wish that my father was able to live more like you.  He does not cope with the illness so well, but luckily he has also never seemed to be too miserable because of it.  I am the one who is miserable because I am cleaning up after the setbacks and it gets a little bit more difficult each time.  Somehow, it helps me to read about amazing people like you.  Take care.

    Hello David,

Have read your posts right through, they are so inspirational and give me hope..

The puzzle, David, is why you are questioning your motives and feeling guilty about an evidently unique and positive contribution you are making, warmly noticed by others?Think the answer is there in your posts.. the lack of praise, encouragement early on in your life, not your fault at all, but with huge long term effects on your self esteem and feelings of self guilt.

It is your personal gift  to society, generously given,so ENJOY that new feeling and smile. It should sustain you. Humility and pride are perfectly comfortable companions and very healthy, when well balanced, so free up and look to your next venture!

Yes as Chris said I think pride is quite different from vanity.(which is very turned in on itself and needs to compare and win points)

Nothing makes me think that describes you!

    Best wishes

    Chris,
