Hello Ramona,
Please understand that all medications have side effects; however, not everyone experiences all or any of those side effects. If your son did, he would need to bring it up to his psychiatrist to see if a dose change or a switch to another medication would alleviate the problem.
Most of all, you have to weigh the benefits of taking meds (mental wellness) with the risk of not taking it (a psychotic episode).
If you are new to the mental health community, you are not alone.
We are all on medication here, and we do our best to live well in recovery.
Even when the stigma about taking meds or having schizophrenia is great, we have proven that people can lead full, productive happy lives, despite having a mental illness.
The earlier someone gets in treatment, the better the outcome.
And it may take trial-and-error to find the best, most effective drug to treat your son's condition.
Consider all your options.
Regards,
Chris
