Whether schizophrenia affects you or a loved one, you want to know how long it will last, and when things will get better. So, it must be frustrating to be answered along the lines of, ‘it depends', or, ‘there are a lot of things to consider', or, ‘we really can't say for sure.' Wha...

Which kind of personality is likely to have the best recovery?

Hi Carolyn,

Good question. The answer is actually broader than simply personality and tends to be described as 'premorbid adjustment'. This revolves around a few issues, examples of which are the person's ability to establish and maintain friendships and sexual relationships and avoid social isolation. Performance at school or work tends to slip significantly in those with poor premorbid adjustment. It has been noted that in people deemed to have good adjustment are more social, have shorter stays in hospital and have lower rates of residual symptoms.

What helped me very much was the book of Proverbs in the Bible, but this might not work for everyone.  The book of Proverbs helped me contextualize "madness" to be the result of "folly".  Then Proverbs speek about the tons of actions which can be considered "folly" and how to avoid these actions (which is called wisdom).  Also it inspired me to replace maladaptive actions with beneficial action habits.  This took a lot of work and a lot of teary nights where I would take refuge and just memorize a line or two, nonetheless it helped.  Some days I wouldn't want to get up off of the couch but I had in my head that "dilligent hands will rule" and that "to a sluggards(lazy people), a bush could easily be supposed a bear!"  I would tell my lathargic self, "Get up, you sluggard!".  I just graduated from college, praise God and family!  Good luck!  You can do it!  Things CAN get better.  Just get LOTS of advise from people about the dillusions and don't always presume that you know what is the right path without advise.  Most of the time, just talk about "normal" things with people.  Recover, THEN figure the weird stuff out.  Do this the RIGHT way in academia, just like everyone else.  Hope some of this helps! :o)   You are very special, just do things that INSPIRE other people to say so.  You can do it!!!  May God bless you and bring you peace!
