We look for imbalances in their life, be it social, or emotional.  As the helper, we assess the helpees talents, uncover strengths and talents   Interests lead us to a greater expression of who we are.  Maslow saw mental illness as a failure of human growth. Clients suffer when these avenues are blocked.  As we come to understand our goal, we open up the growth process.  We also assess social , and support networks  Personal relationhips must also be explored.

A study done by Cohen (1997) cited that the more relationships we have in our life, the better we are in resisting communicable diseases.  Psychoneuroimmunology has stated that the vibrancy of our emotional health drives the effectiveness of our immune system.  Our beliefs can alter our emotional health. Ones spiritual beliefs are also important to one's health.  Spirituality leads us to wholeness.  Therapists also question the roadblock to the helpee's emotional health "By addressing the whole person, we enhance our ability to connect.  According to the psychologist William Anthony, recovery is   personal journey.  It is marked by hope, spirituality and the support of others.  Hope is the desire accompanied by positive expectations.  This author states that hope is the foundation to recovery.  The phenomenon of empowerment incorporates our belief that we have control.  It involves advocacy for ones self, and for others.

Support is also essential. It provides us with the feeling of universality, the belief that we are not alone in our struggle and pain.  Support reduces our sense of isolation.  Spirituality also plays an important role, providing us with hope and solace.  Spiritual health also needs to be explored.  This phenomenon exists in all individuals which helps move us toward wholeness.  There is mounting evidence that religion and spirituality  lends vibrancy to our emotional healing and recovery. It prevents emotional illness from reoccurring.  Spirituality has a positive effect on mental well being.

Dr. Harold Koenig believes that prayer has a calming effect on an individual.  In some clients, it reduces hospitalization.  One theory indicates that religion helps to reduce stress and anxiety.  Some say that it helps clients identify problem and express their needs. Faith is an important factor when it comes to controlling symptoms.

Recovery is a process of transformation, adaptation, changes in self- discovery, changes in attitude, values and goals.  Religious beliefs and spirituality help by providing coping and problem solving strategies.  It also provides one with social support and a sense of meaning in the midst of confusion.
