I didn't want to tell anyone this but I stopped taking prozac ( not abilify) for a few days, despite knowing that abruptly stopping can have side effects. I wanted to see if it made a difference in a few of the reported side effects such as weight gain etc... anyway "soo coincidentally" I de...

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 11:08 AMHello MyAnimus,
I am sorry to hear that maybe the medication caused you to gain weight.
Also I wonder if something was going on in your life at the same time that caused you to consider stopping the Prozac.
Please do be honest with your psychiatrist about the side effects of the drugs, or what you perceive to be side effects.
It comes down to a "benefit analysis": does the benefit of the drug outweigh the side effect? Can the side effect be managed?
There are anti-depressants that don't cause weight gain, or cause relatively little weight gain. The Abilify is an atypical known to cause no weight gain or littel weight gain relative to the other atypicals.
Feel free to write a SharePost whenever you want. We're on your side. We understand how it is to gain weight and feel flabby.
Regards,
Chri

I used to

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 04:16 PMAnimous, I used to, many years ago stop the meds because of my pride. I used to get freaked out cause I had a "mental" illness, and my pride said that this was self controllable..just pull myself up and stop being negative!
After I met a Dr.K in North Carolina, when I lived there in the 90's he explained the disease with such simple sense I couldn't make sense of Quitting the meds!
He asked me if I had any negative judgments of epileptics, people suffering from MS, parkinsons, diabeics..I said of COURSE NOT, they couldn't help it, they needed Medication to live! Then he told me that I needed Medication to live. He told me that my Dad didn't commit suicide, that this disease killed him. Didn't it make sense that people who had Brain malfunctions need medication to live now?
Of course I got it. I cried and cried, but I got it. I havenl't missed one pill since. And I must say, after that I kept remarking "so this is how other people feel and react in the world!" No wonder all those years people shied from me, yet they didn't any more. On the meds I was just like them, something I had wished my whole life.
I hope you don't hedge on your meds again. I like you and your share posts help me.

I am glad you Wised up and went back on Prozac. Forgive me if it sounds like I am Preaching but going off any medication without the knowledge of a doctor can have Serious Effects on one's health. Try to keep in mind your doctor has you on any medication for a reason so please don't try going without any medication unless your doctor tell you to! Keep your doctor aware of any side effects or concerns you may have on any medication he has you on! You need to work as a team!
