Since starting on Zoloft 3 days ago, I have already gained weight. I don't really know why, because it is apparently not associated with weight gain. I don't really know what to do about this. I can see this becoming a problem, as I am already overweight. Well, let's just see how it goes until the next doctors appointment (about a week away).

Don't you hate it when that happens.  To gain weight that fast probably means it is making you retain water, although I know that is small consolation.

The last time I went from 10mg of Zyprexa to 20mg, I gained 9 lbs in one week.  I felt so discouraged.  When I was fat, I would rather stop the meds and be psychotic.  When I was psychotic I would rather take the meds and be fat.  So that it was a constant battle between the two.   A difficult choice that doctors don't understand.

But I wish the best for you.  I am on Zoloft (200mg/day) and am happy to say I have had no weight gain or other negative side effects.  Another thing you might want to know -- my psychiatrist also prescribed Deplin (a derivative of folate) at 7.5mg/day.  He said it boosts the effectiveness of the Zoloft.  So far, so good.

The folate thing is interesting.. i wonder if that would stop the weight gain. It is all very frustrating. Anyway. Thanks Carolyn.

Hello MyAnimus,

I understand how you feel about weight gain because I used to be 20 lbs overweight.

The medications used to treat schizophrenia don't help in this regard.

Please try to be kind to yourself about this.

Regards,

Christina
