Medicaid...The Long Wait

I applied for medicaid over a month ago and I am still waiting for a reply. I wish they would hurry up and either deny me or approve me, so that I can move on to Plan B. Plan B is to turn in my denial letter to the clinic and let them pay for my medication, or a portion of the costs.

When I spoke to the Medicaid representative they told me I would be approved or denied between 45 and 60 days. That is a long time! What if my medication runs out, now I am taking samples from the clinic, but after next week I will not have any left. I cannot afford to be without medication, I know that if I stop taking it the symptoms will return and I will hear voices, have trouble concentrating, and get paranoid.

I hope I do not have to come out of pocket for this medicine, but it seems like that is what is about to happen. My SSI check does not give me the leisure to have extra money to pay for medicine.

Check with your medication's manufacturer's site.  They usually offer some sort of program to help those who cannot afford the medication.

Best wishes,

I know how hard it iis to have no money to pay for meds. What burns me up is that the system doesn't care.  If they don't pay for hte meds, they end up paying hospital bills. Without my meds I also get  paranoid and hear voices.  I even do on my meds.

I know h ow slow things can be and how hard it is to wait. I  don't know what to suggest except to talk to  your doctor at the clinic and ask for more samples. I am sure your doctor doesn't want to see you relapse because you don't have your meds. I would suggest you doctor write a letter to Medicaid but then you would have to wait forever to get a reply. What state are you from?  I live in Maryland and here therea re organizations that pay for meds fo rpeople who can't get them other wise some orgainzation aclled MUSST-Idon't know what the letters stand for but they arrange to get people meds  who can't afford them otherwise- once again the best thing to do I think is to ask your doctor what to do. I am sure he/she would notlike to see you relapse without your meds and give you some more smaples. I really wish I could help you with this one. I know h ow imprtant it is for us to take our  medications.

Claudia, I live in Atlanta, Georgia. I never thought of getting financial support from organization-thanks! I've been using the doctor's samples for over three months, I think the clinic has ran out of samples for my kind of medicine, but of course I will check again.

Hi Ashley,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

This is one instance where I feel univeresal healthcare of some sort, with guaranteed prescription drug benefits, would be a great idea.

Also, go on the www.pparx.org or www.rxassist.org web sites to see if you can get the reduced cost or free medications through drug manufacturers' patient assistance programs.

Best wishes,

Christina
