Embracing My Mind (EMM), my non-profit organization, jump started its first support group, Strengthening Each Other, yesterday at the mental health center in the Atlanta area. The meeting was a success because people showed up despite the rain.

We studied schizophrenia, specifically my testimony through a blog entry I wrote on Saturday, March 7, 2009, "What is Schizophrenia to Me," from my blog Overcoming Schizophrenia. Group participants engaged in discussion by sharing their own testimonies, and they can relate to me and to each other.

My therapist ran the group with me and helped me ask some questions. At the end of group, my therapist had everyone say something positive about group, which made me feel really good. One member said I made really good handouts. I also brought refreshments that the group enjoyed.

I am very excited about this opportunity to directly advocate mental health education and recovery. The meeting will take place under a weekly basis which is exciting. So far the group is open to clinic clients only, but I plan on getting space at the church so it will be open to the general public.

Thank you for sharing this moment with me!
