Weight gain and medication

By carradiha Saturday, January 14, 2012

I have tried weight watchers to lose the excess weight my medication has caused. It worked well for a while yet still was constantly hungry, found it time consuming to track and expensive to buy meeting fees and food.

I was gaining. Yet finally think I have found the solution. I work out at the gym, when I can and have found a pre packaged food company which delivers me healthy meals and snacks. I have will power to stick to it and have so far, don't feel hungry and it is working. It has been my second week so far and already I feel the difference.

I am a lazy cook and can't be bothered yet with healthy home cooked pre prepared meals it is so easy. Shopping for myself I get tempted with sweets and fast food, yet am being very strict at eating what I am getting.

My second week and I have lost 4 kgs and it will just get better and better. I am so proud.

I want to congratulate you on your weight loss. Weight gain seems to be consequence of many of the medications we must take to keep our mental health in line. I too have managed to go from app, 198 pounds to 133 in around 4 years. I took a class called Never Say Diet in which a presentation was given in a weekly class and in which a healthy snack was prepared and some simple exercises were taught. As a result of that class my life was changed. I continue to exercise on a daily basis and while I do pretty eat whatever I like i do practice portion control. As a result I feel so much Better and I still have people in life who continue to be impressed with how much weight I have lst all while still on medication for schizoaffective disorder.

I have taken a different tack.  From age 12 to 37 I was anorexic, low weight 93 lbs.  I literally starved myself, sometimes not eating anything for up to 12 days at a time.

Then when I started on Zyprexa in 1997, my weight doubled from 93 to 186 lbs.  At this weight, I felt very uncomfortable physically and psychologically.  I did everything I could to lose weight -- Weight Watchers, fasting, whatever.  In fact, I tried WW a  number of times.  I lost 50 lbs once, then gained it right back.  I didn't feel like getting out of bed, much less exercising.  But I bought a AirDyne exercise bike and forced myself to ride it for 15 minutes a day, starting off at close to zero rpm's.  Gradually, over a year I built up to running a mile.  Later, though, I settled on walking.  And I am steady now at 168 lbs.

Believe me, I never thought I would be this big.  But I have made my peace with it and am much happier now than I ever was when anorexic.  A low weight did not make me happy, in other words.  Now, my diet is healthy and I eat about 2000 - 2500 cals per day and stay the same.  So I'm happy with that.  Now I am walking for 30 min x 3 times per week at varying speeds (according to what my joints feel like that day.)

I'm happy for anyone who reaches a healthy weight and manages to keep it there.  Yes, I am still categorized as "obese" by my BMI, because I am 5'2" tall.  But I'm also perfectly happy with my life and how I look.

Hi carradiha,

It's wonderful you're seeing success with the gym and the healthful foods.

I go to the gym at least four times a week and have done so for the last year.

Alas, no medication I ever took caused me to have an appetite, so I didn't gain weight.  I'm lucky this way.

I eat mostly seafood and fish, vegetables and try to get fiber in my eating plan, too.  I order food from an online delivery service.

Enjoy your day.

Regards,

Christina
