Many times, tiny steps to recovery is all we can do for the time being. We would love to have a great jump in improvement. But, it just doesn't work that way with recovery. Recovery is a slow process. And for those who have dealt with the illness, it is important to have support. What I have learned is that those tiny, small steps add up. So, for those of you out there who think that illness is just not recoverable. Think again!
We are a society that wants everything "NOW!". Unfortunately, that is not the way that recovery works. Recovery is sometimes not visible. And it's not always upward. Sometimes, we take a couple of steps back before we can go forward. And it's okay to do that.
I have learned that it's a long process. Be gentle with yourself while you are recovering. And don't compare with folks who don't have a mental illness. They're not living your life. So, why should you compare and make them a critic? Our recoveries are a testament to how brave we are in all of this. I seriously believe in this or I wouldn't be just saying that. So, go easy with you. And keep going!
Establish goals even though they are tiny ones. Maybe today, you were able to get out of bed. Or you were able to clean the bathroom. Whatever your goal is, it's a worthy one. Establishing tiny goals every day only help you out in the long run. After all, what is life, but a bunch of small goals strung together?
