Why are schizophrenics said to be more susceptible to violent crimes.
I have been assaulted, threatened and harrassed. It has become commonly known in my community that I have this disease. Last year I have been struck by three different motorists, and two of those times I was incapacitated. The troopers laugh when I report these events and they make me feel like an idiot. A few people have tried to initiate fights with me and when I've squared off for self defense, they've lifted their cell phones and called the troopers. This year I've had five visits from the troopers asking not to hassle these people because "they're respected members of the community."
I have a wrecked bicycle and each time I point it out to them they dismiss the matter and leave me with a friendly warning. I reported one collision to a dispatcher and she said "avoid contact with that person." then she hung up on me. But I dont know who some of the persons were. Is there a law enforcement agency that will investigate these crimes without compromising the chain of evidence? Is my society sicker than I am after all?
Hello optimus,
I am sorry to hear of your troubles. I wish it could've been different when you sought help. Some if not most law enforcement officers unfortunately need to be trained to be human beings, because they wouldn't know how to be human unless it was legislated.
When I wasn't doing so well, I also was put at risk for car accidents.
As you have learned, stigma exists. You are an outstanding member of the community, too, and don't forget that even if others treat you as if you're not.
You might see if your town or city has a civilian complaint review board for police officers, as we have here in New York City. Another suggestion is that if you think the media will be at all fair and consider your story, you can approach one of the reporters of the local newspaper where you live.
Regards,
Chris
