Q: Can epileptics have a mental illness similar to schizophrenia?

I have been an epileptic for over 40 years and also was diagnosed with schizophrenia about 30 years ago when i was about 30.  My sister was told recently that there are sometimes schizophrenic-like symptoms that, in some cases, go along with epilepsy.  Is this correct?  I would like to tell my doctor about it so she can get some more information as she has never mentioned this possibility and neither has my neurologist.

Hi jeannie5438,

A quick Google search for "epilepsy schizophrenia symptoms" yields numerous journal article abstracts.  Here's a site to look at:  http://professionals.epilepsy.com/page/psysym_psychosis.html

I couldn't make sense of the technical info, and you probably wouldn't be able to either, so bring what you find to your doctor to talk about it.

One last thing:  I knew someone who had both epilepsy and schizophrenia.

Regards,

Chri
