How do I help my son who is 16

Sherry
06/24/08

I have a 16 year old son that has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia/Artisium/Bipolar.  He is getting violent and I am afraid that he may hurt someone or himself.  Is there any place tht I can take him that he can stay at and recieve help?  I live in a small town in Kenutcky and do not have any money, so it has been hard for me to find him some help.

I would love for him to be close to home so he will not feel abandoned, but I am more interested in getting him some well needed help.

Hello Sherry,

Not sure what artisium is, however, I am familiar with schizophrenia and bipolar.

The criteria for admission to a psych hospital is that a person is a danger to himself or others.  If he has no money of his own, you should apply for Medicaid/Medicare and social security disability benefits.

Since you've admitted he meets the criteria for admission, I would consider an involuntary commitment or else, if the staff will consider him (they might not, if he is violent), a halfway house.  At the least, some kind of therapy focused on anger management.

The bottom line is, he needs to get in treatment, he may not be willing to seek treatment on his own, but you have to find him a therapist and another place for him to live. Right now, if you have him committed to a hospital, you have to be strong and know that he will resent you and try to guilt you and most likely will play games with your head to get you to change your mind or allow him to live with you if he gets out and refuses treatment.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has a Kentucky affiliate that could steer you to treatments and residences in your town or city.  If resources there are non-existent, you may have to consider sending him to another area.

NAMI Kentucky's information:

10510 LaGrange Road, Building 103

I wish you some peace of mind.  Hang in there and don't give up, yet know that you have to set boundaries and those boundaries often will be tested.  So stay strong.

Regards,
Chris
