Do vitamin B and omega 3 oil help?
My daugther er is only 16. she is curretnly taking Olanzapine 10 mg has esposides every few months. I am terribly worried about her . I would like to know whether any alternative therapy can help ie: Art therapy, crano therapy, vitamin B3 and B6 aswell as cod liver oils? What is the correct dozage, pls advice.
Hello agreen,
Any alternative therapy is best used as an adjunct to medication, not as a replacement.
Art therapy is wonderful! I haven't heard about crano (what is that?) and cod liver oil used to treat schizophrenia. I do take Fish Oil ?Omega 3 softgels and Super B Complex, but not for treating my schizophrenia.
What I could suggest is cognitive therapy as an adjunct treatment so she can understand what's going on, having her read this Connection Web site, and for you to find a peer support for teens in your city or town.
As for art therapy, I draw and paint, and it calms my brain, gives me focus and I am centered, it deflects me from worry so that I'm totally absorbed with the artwork I'm creating. As well, there are art therapists who have private clients. If you live in New York City, I can look for the name of the Institute that refers people to art therapists, let me know.
The key is you are worried; however, she can do well if she stays in treatment and learns coping skills to manage her symptoms. Recovery is possible. If it seems the Olanzapine isn't work, understand that if she stays on some kind of anti-psychotic, it will prevent further brain deterioration. She can then work with her doctor to explore other drug avenues as new drugs come out. (And research is leading the way, year-by-year, to better drugs.)
So stay hopeful.
God bless,
Chris
