I have a twin sis ( identical) who has schizophrenia . How can I prevent from getting this?

Topics:schizophrenic twin

My twin sis got the symptoms of hearing sounds, and unruly behaviour and got treated several times( 5) . She got married She got admitted several times after marriage and complains of lack of love and affection from her husband.  Her behaviour sometimes seems irritating and senseless to me as well.  While in childhood we often had fights and abuse each other and I always felt like 'want to get away' feeling.

I am settled in a foreign country and lives with my husband and two kids. I got married same time as she was.  My husband is very loving and caring. We often had fights and I had shown frequent aggressive behaviour , which I regret later on.  I try to control my anger several times.  But it was never worse.

I am afraid that I may also get schizophrenia like my sis.  Can you advise me how to prevent from this attack?

Thank you

Dear unknown forgive my frankness in this response. If they knew how to prevent schizophrenia there wouldn't be any. The doctors and scientists don't even know what causes sz. It's not something you catch like a cold or flu.

In my case I believe it's caused by three factors. 1.genetics. 2.social. 3.illegal drugs. These are my beliefs not any doctor or specialists' findings.

I have 4 siblings who show no signs of schizophrenia. The only other relative that I'm aware of that has sz is a cousin.

I sincerely hope that you don't get sz. If you do have sz there are many treatment options available.

Take care,

David

Hello unknown,

As Dave said, there's no test to determine who will and won't get schizophrenia, nor is there a cure; however, with early intervention, and the commitment to staying in treatment, one can recover fully.

Best,

Chris

Hi, concerned twin sis,

As Dave and Chris said there is no known prevention for schizophrenia nor predictive  knowledge of who exactly might go on to develop it over a lifetime.

Apart from the genetic risk which you obviously share with your sister, outside factors ,early neonatal damage, stresses ,drugs ,nurturing differences,as a child and later, and many unknown triggers are also probably involved.

So we are all different, with a unique precious individuality, even identical twins, as you of course so well know and value, and we need to be!! Vive la difference!

To answer at a slight tangent to your question, the very fact you ask it shows your insight and family experience would alert you to signs in yourself at an early stage, should you be unlucky  and also go on to develop sz. Your preknowledge would give you a great advantage compared with someone else to try and get early help and treatment.....not prevention exactly but known to be connected with much improved term outcome.

Good luck,

Chris,
