hello curiousandfrustrated,

Genetic components to schizophrenia are being discovered and this illness could run in families.  My family tree has a number of us with SZ and other mental illnesses hanging out on various branches.

As of yet, no definite cause has been pinpointed and there could possibly be a number of factors that create the medical condition known as schizophrenia.

Stress and environment are two factors that can cause someone to have a breakdown when he or she has a genetic predisposition to have schizophrenia.

The prevailing theory is that an excess of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain, is responsible for the illness.  What exactly causes the dopamine to go haywire isn't known.

So I tend to believe the genetics theory.

Regards,

Christina

maybe the genetic factor causes more production of DMT dymethyltriptomine and the dopamine levels are either a product of or compensation for this.  DMT is rapidly absorbed by the body which may be why they havent noticed any high levels of it when studying the brain.  this compound can create auditory and visual hallucinations.... it is widely used by shamans in different areas in the world for spiritual and ritual purposes.   i may be wrong but hallucinations caused by a hightened production of a hallucinagin like  DMT naturally produced by the brain i think makes sense.
