The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) in the United States has family support meetings. Call them at (800) 950-NAMI (6264) to get the name and phone number of the local chapter in your city or town where you can meet with others to talk about this. Everyone there at the support meetings will understand you and be able to give you insight into what was going on.
You were wise to protect yourself by doing what you had to to. I realize it wasn't easy to live with your husband nor to make the choice you did. Your own mental health is what's most important.
Regards,
Christina
