Q: Is feeling outraged part of schzophrenia?

I was diagnosed with paraniod schizophrenia about 10 years ago. I don't have too much paranioa any more it seems it has turned into anger.  I take 3mg of respirdol a day if I take it I feel alright most of the time. But if I don't take anger wells up inside me and I can't turn it off the anger renders me almost not functionable and it makes me miserable. Is this apart of schzophrenia will it ever go away? I'm tired of being like this.

Hello tired,

I have written in here and elsewhere that anger is the catalyst for change yet is not the solution itself.

Anger is an energy that can motivate you to take positive action or channel it in a negative way.  Because you have suggested that sometimes you don't take the Risperdal I am going to let you know that you will see the best relief by taking the SZ meds every day.

Anger could be a symptom, or it could also be related to how you feel about being diagnosed with schizophrenia.  Your feelings are real.  It is healthy that you want to get a handle on your anger and not let it rule your life.

I might suggest therapy which will sound "old hat" to people at the Connection because I'm a big fan of using it as an adjunct treatment for people diagnosed with schizophrenia and they have heard me mention it here before.

Some kind of sport or exercise might also help you release your feelings and gain control.

Again I will wrap up by reassuring you that feeling angry you have schizophrenia or resenting how the illness has played out in your life is one of the emotional responses to the trauma of having gotten sick.

So please be gentle on yourself as you do what you have to do to get this under control.

Regards,

Christina

I don't know but I used to get angry and be angry but it doesn't accomplish very much so I gave it up. There are still times that I *feel* angry and it is hard to explain. People do go through phases like that. The important thing is to be able to maintain control at all times of your anger so that it doesn't get you in trouble. I have always been a person with a severe temper but I never let it get out of control and believe me that I have had many opportunities to let it get out of control.
