Hi Robert,

Well, there's only one human race, so I guess your question must be culture related! It's a good question but not one that is easily answered. Countries vary in their levels of medical sophistication, technology, methods of recording or access to records. This is one reason why obtaining accurate stats at the global level is a bit of a problem.

Having said that, it does appear that developing countries have a lower prevalence of schizophrenia. Yet, the outcome for schizophrenia is better in developed countries. Even within a single country, the cultural mix can throw up some interesting differences, with some groups being over-represented in the stats. Some argue this is to do with the way we measure mental health without due regard to cultural norms. Some cultures are more accepting of what we might describe as mental illness and some are very protective of relatives, who may never actually receive treatment and do not therefore make it on to the records.

I know this doesn't directly answer your specific question, but it does appear that no country or culture is free from schizophrenia (paranoid or otherwise). If you'd like to dig a little deeper into the stats a simple Google search will produce some good results. Here's a start from schizophrenia.com

Hi Robert Stockus,

This question has been Asked on this site before.  My answer was that SZ affects all races equally.  One person begged to differ, stating African Americans have 100-150 percent greater chance of having SZ.  I suggested they are often misdiagnosed.  The person believed people living in cities are more likely to develop SZ and most African Americans live in cities so that accounts for it.  I'm still hesitant about this.  Will research this some more and get back to you shortly.

Regards,

Christina

Statistics are hard to interpret because of so many external factors. Your question is no exception. Is race the issue or is it intermarriage or environment or trauma or (illegal) drugs or family life or education or opportunity? I used to think that anyone could become affected by it if conditions were right. I'm not sure if that's true but who knows? There seems to be a number of contributing factors. Reply
