Q: finding assisted living for schizophrenic 27 year old brother in california, see additional info.

My 27 year old brother was diagnosed with parinoid schizophrenia and bi polar disorder and we feel we are no longer safe to live with him and feel he needs some sort of trained proffessional assisted living so he can be safe as well as for our safety, he is on social security and we need to find out if there is such a place that can help since he is not 55 or older, can you help?

Hello jones of california,

I understand your concern.

Your local NAMI [National Alliance on Mental Illness] affiliate where you live in California should be able to give you the names of the residential programs where you live.

Call their national hotline at (800) 950 NAMI (6264) to find the phone number of your local chapter to call to get the names of these places.

Also, your local reputable psych hospital will possibly know of the places in your area that they recommend for patients leaving the hospital.

Although I wasn't a danger to myself or anyone else, I lived for two years in a halfway house and then a residence so I could get back on my feet before living independently. From the time i was 23 until I was 25, I lived in the system.

These living arrangements could benefit anyone who can't yet live independently.

I don't live in California so I can't give you the name of a place, but I know that for lots of people with schizophrenia, group homes work well. That way someone is "supervising" and checking to see that you take your meds, that sort of thing, yet you have some measure of freedom.

If you are unable to find an appropriate place for your brother, there are also day-programs many places where your brother could have some kind of structured environment during the day and come home at night.

Hello. My name is Ashley and I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. I also lived in California, San Diego to be exact. While I lived there I stayed in an independent living establishment. There they provided meals and access to therapy at a local center. You should look into independent living because it provided some freedom and supervision, we had a curfew and visiting hours. Usually when you see a phyciatrist they would point you in the right direction. As my uncle sees a doctor at a county clinic and there they have many resources for us. So maybe you could ask your local county office gl.

Where in California do you live? You need to go to your county's mental health office. They will have a list of places for your brother to live. Explain his needs clearly. You want a board and care..but be careful! Some places make a business out of this with little regard for the needs of their boarders. The county I am in, I visited a couple before starting my own and I could see the impatience and disgust in the owner's treatment of the residents. It is taxing sometimes of course, but if you're not a person who cannot take their behavior personally and so keep your patience, you're not a person who should be running a board and care.

Hi, I am Deborah Harris, I have no good news since I am looking for the same thing!! My son is 32 years old. He is schizophrenic and bi-polar. I need help so bad also. He has been turned down for different places. Where can they go? Where do they fit in!! Some one has to help. If you find out anything please let it be known!!!!!!

my son is 36 and he has been in prison since 1997 he is diagnosed with skitzophrenia plus he has granma seijures i had to move tko a senior citizen buildling due to my health failing me and had to get operations on my corroded arteries or die. i know he wont have any income when he gets out of prilson, where can he go for help i am unable tko have him stay with me as they have rules here where no one is allowed more than 7 days. can you help me as hlis max date is may 2012. i am tryiong to get information ahead of time.i will be looking for your answer. thank you. also, i am in michigan
