Hello stephanie duncan,

Schizophrenia carries a genetic risk however there is no guarantee a person will develop this illness even if it runs in his family.

You can read more about schizophrenia and heredity.

The best thing you can do is educate yourself about this illness so that if you see anything corresponding to symptoms developing you can take action quickly.

I would if I were you refrain from worrying about whether your son will inherit the schizophrenia.  Instead, I would shower him with love and tell him every day that you love him.

I would also make sure your son as he gets older is active in the world either via a part-time job or volunteer work and via family travel to other cities or even abroad.

The best defense against the schizophrenia is for a person to have a high level of functioning prior to their illness striking.

Regards,

Christina
