Q: does pms normally cause pschosis to become worse

the week before [sometimes one in a half or two]I start my period I become much more paranoid, I have spacey feelings-like I'm far away looking in- much more often, I feel very anxious and angry, and I hear things others don't much more often. Is this normal for someone who is schitzo?

Hi pat,

Yes this can happen.  People who have their periods who grind their teeth have been known to grind their teeth more when they have PMS.

I myself once flew off the handle when I had PMS and it was not pretty.  At least all I did was snap at a woman on the phone who kept dialing my number when it was the wrong number and I had told her not to keep calling.  She hung up promptly after that.

HOWEVER: you might want to consult with your psychiatrist about this the next time you see him or her because to me the idea that you hear things others don't hear might be something you want to discuss.

Although if the symptoms regularly appear when you have PMS and disappear regularly as soon as you don't have your period I would tell the doctor this too.

What would impress me is the degree to which you can cope with the breakthrough symptoms when they happen or whether you would rather not have them happen at all.

My own psychiatrist told me two years ago that as regards my treatment the only acceptable outcome was total symptom relief.

So you have to decide for yourself what you want to deal with if the option to try to change the dose would reduce or eliminate the pms symptoms.

Not everyone will have total symptom relief so the question becomes: are you able to cope when the symptoms come on?  Do you utilize coping techniques?  How long do the symptoms last and are they manageable?

Best to put your mind at ease and also bring this up with your pdoc.

I still have days [thankfully only occasionally] where I have to call in sick when I get my period.

Regards,

Christina
