Is it safe and/or usual to use Risperdal with Welbutrin together for treatment?

Corra

What if this person uses meth while on their meds?  or takes muscle relaxers or drinks alcohol (a few beers)?  I believe they shouldn't be using anything besides their prescription.  Their come down is full of bizarre psychotic behavior, memory loss, paranoia, agitated and depression.  I presume much of this is due to mixing.  They're now off everything and looking to go into rehab.  I'm wondering if they should go to a hospital first.  Any advice?  I wonder if the diagnosis is correct as we have no family history.  Could schizophrenia be brought on by long time meth use?  I know the person suffers from depression and I would have guessed bi-polar.  His girlfriend thinks he's schizophrenic because her dad is and she think's his behavior matches.

Hello Corra,

By all means, he should get into treatment and stay into treatment, in this case, it would be what's called MICA: Mental Illness/Chemical Abuse treatment that treats both the drug addiction and the mental illness.

Any kind of drug use, particularly heavy marijuana use and meth use, has the potential to cause schizophrenia.  Fergie, the Grammy-winning singer, claimed in an interview that her meth addiction caused her to have schizophrenia-like symptoms.  At once point, she was afraid to go out of the house.

This is serious business.  There could be relapses along the way, so understand the bridge back to life is sometimes a long one.  Support your friend along the way.  Praise him when he's doing well, and stand by him when he's not doing so well.

As for whether Risperdal and Welbutrin could be used together, that's entirely possible.  Log on to www.drugs.com, where you can type in the names of two drugs to see if they interact with each other in a dangerous way when used in combination.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

cb
