You can also apply for res-hab for him. (Medicaid Waiver Services) There are a great many agencies who do this. And you can apply to as many as you want, because some agencies have a slot available sooner than others. These agencies can also offer you Respite Services.
If you live in New York, one very large and excellent agency is SKIP of New York. (it is not only for children, but for disabled adults as well) Phone: 1 (212) 268-5999. They are extremely friendly and helpful (my own personal experience). Tell them you wish to apply for Res-Hab and Respite for your husband. The application process is simple and short and can be done over the phone.
Once your husband gets a "slot" a certain number of weekly hours will be aloted him, year-round. A worker will come to your home to be with your husband and care for him during those hours, and give you some much needed relief.
You can also apply for a PCA for your husband. That's a Personal Care Assistant. This service is given by the city, and is a long application, and quite a long wait, but well worth it. At the end of the process a worker will be be aloted to your husband on a daily basis for most or all days of the week, year-round, for a certain amount of daily hours. (Usually 4 hours per day)
There are also quite a number of Reimbursment programs. Usually for up to $500 per year each. One is OMRDD, another good one is Center for Family Support, and Evelyn Dougllin (718) 965-1998, all in New York. These programs will reimburse you for care-giver services (if you hire someone to occasionally care for your husband), and for certain other goods and services you've paid for.
