Q: should i approve geodon for my 13 yr old son

my 13 yr old son is currently being evaluated as an inpatient for bipolar disorder. I was just notified to approve the med. geodon. i'm not sure after reading the good and bad reviews. i'm very confused right now and do not know what to do. the dr is waiting on an answer right now. i'm concerned about sudden death, rapid heartbeat, sleeping disorder, weight gain, and suicide. i'm not sure if these are side effects that are common or not but they are of a concern. he is currently taking concerta for adhd which would be combined with the geodon

Hello,

I agree with abcd's response.

One thing though: Geodon is not known to cause the kind of weight gain that Zyprexa and Clozaril and Risperdal and the other culprits do.  I've been on Geodon for two years with no weight gain except the normal weight gain I experienced when I turned 40 and my metabolism slowed.

However I do know of one woman also an adult who claimed she gained weight on Geodon.  This is atypical because Geodon is not identified with significant weight gain.

Regards,

Christina

Get a second opinion from a really first-class pediatric psyciatrist. Even if you have to pay several hundred dollars out of pocket... It will put your mind at ease that you will be doing the best thing for your son, and could also save you both from tragedy.
