Q: My son is 21 he was in and out of group homes

When he was young, and was diagnosed with ADHD and learning disabilities .Today he still cant keep friends and is always trying to start arguments or egg people on for example he says dad after every sentence. I tell him that this annoys me and he does it more, and smiles about the whole thing.I get mad and then feel bad afterwards it really sucks .I love him but he trys my patience .He can be influenced easily by friends and will be a follower he gets angry easily when he doesn't understand something and he can obsess with things once he likes something he goes at it 100% like computers or walking to the same place like the park by the same route My question is this should I get him diagnosed again or do you know what it really is?

Hello Ed,

You are in a lot of pain and heartache right now and I understand it's hard to cope with your son's behavior.  It might be hard to differentiate whether his comments are a symptom or are just something he can control and does on purpose.  Regardless, even if it's a symptom, acting out is not acceptable.

The question becomes: what kind of therapy would be the best for him?  Behavior modification therapy?  Talk therapy?  I suspect a combination of both might be helpful.

Now: I can't diagnose medical conditions however I will tell you to get a second opinion to see if it could be another condition with similar symptoms.  I don't want to suggest what kind of diagnosis it could be and you should refrain from this as well and let the psychiatrist diagnose the problem.

A diagnosis can change with time and with the advent of new or breakthrough symptoms.  Really you need to get an accurate diagnosis so that the best kind of treatment is determined, based on the symptoms your son is presenting right now.

The CastleConnolly doctor finder can help you find a doctor.  The APA psychologist locator is also available on the Internet.

You most likely do not want to hear that it could take time to see a turn-around for your son.  I do hope you can find some relief soon.

Regards,

Christina
