Hi C Gill,

Donna gave you good advice.  He might need a stronger dose or he might need a change in medication.  Either way he will need to take some form of medication for the rest of his life to get the best possible result and recovery outcome.

I've been in recovery 24 years and four years ago the drug I was on stopped working so I had to switch to an atypical.

Stress can aggravate a person and cause him to have symptoms by the way.

I'm a big fan of cognitive therapy to develop techniques for coping with your schizophrenia symptoms as well.

Regards,

Christina

Thank you so much.  I really needed to hear you all responses being that my family and his family just do not get it.  He's been on these meds for 10 yrs and it's not because he skipped a pill anymore.  We live in a small town where the small clinic that he goes to really makes me feel like they do not care about him or his condition so again thank you.

I have schizophrenia, diagnosed in 1995.  Am now age 52.  I had to try a number of antipsychotics, including Risperdal, before I found one that worked.  Zyprexa worked and I took it for 13 years and only a few months ago switched to Saphris, which for me is a far better alternative.  Has less side effects.  If he has had three relapses, the two of you might want to approach his psychiatrist about possibly trying other prescription meds.  Best wishes to you and your husband.
