Why is it when I was sick I never heard voices

I used to smell thing, taste things and feel things and see things. I heard people talking about me, but I never heard voices. The psychiatric nurse said I was not schizophrenic at first because I never heard voices. I waited so long and suffered for a long time, she said I did not need to see a psychiatrist. When I eventually saw one I had no idea what she was saying. I thought she said something else and I said yes to being on drugs and to hearing voices and she said it was drug induced. I know it could not be as I have always been anti drug. She would not believe when my mother said it was not and said she would not know. People at mental health treat people strangely as if there is something wrong with them. People with mental illness are very clever and creative. They do not get the respect they deserve. I now see a private GP and am ok.

Hi womanc,

It is possible to have SZ and not hear voices or hallucinate.  It is possible to have a mild form of SZ.  Again I am sorry to hear you were not taken seriously.  I hope it is much better now.

Regards,

Christina

Hi womanc

I don't really understand why you were seeing a psychiatric nurse if you were not first diagnosed? Nursing care follows diagnosis, or was this a more casual association?

Anyway, auditory hallucinations are fairly common but hallucinations come in different forms. They can and do affect all the senses. From what you say it is these other senses that have been most affected. You do however say, "I heard people talking about me", which could be interpreted that you were either hearing or misinterpreting what was being said around you. Often when people say they hear people talking about them, the content is negative in nature. I wonder if this is what you were experiencing?

Schizophrenia is a syndrome characterized by disturbances in emotions, thought, activity, and language, that leaves patients fearful and withdrawn.
