First of all, just because your father had sz doesn't mean that you automatically have it too, although it is wise to be aware of any changes in yourself that seem to point toward it.  If you are having any symptoms, see a psychiatrist immediately for evaluation.  And if she believes medication would help, be open to taking it as prescribed.  That would be the best way to stay on track and move toward recovery.

Hello rhett-david,

Schizophrenia is treated with a daily medication routine and therapy.

Not everyone whose mother or father has or had SZ will develop this illness.

Like Carolyn said, if you start hearing voices or having other symptoms, get help right away.  The quicker someone with SZ gets into treatment, the better the outcome.

People can recover from schizophrenia if they take their meds and get involved in positive social activities.

Regards,

Christina
