Topics:changing medication

My son is currently taking invega, he has been on this for a while. It has worked up til now & we are thinking about changing him to geodon. What I would like to know is if the problems he has controlling his body temp. will be the same with geodon? Also he is 11 yrs old & weighs 110 lbs. would this be a safe drug for him? His official diagonsis is manic bi-polar with a touch of schizoprenia.

Hello Cindy,

You need to consult with your son's psychiatrist about any medication change, especially regarding the fact that your son is 110 lbs and 11 years old, I do not know how much an 11 year old is supposed to weigh and wether he is overweight or skinny for his age.

Geodon is the least likely to cause weight gain of all the atypicals.

Your question I believe was prompted because you want to consider a medication change, and if I read between the lines you want to change meds because the Invega has a side effect related to his body temperature.

I want you to know that Geodon has as a possible side effect low body temperature.  Does this mean your son would definitely have the same problem if he were switched to the Geodon?  I would ask his psychiatrist about this likelihood.

My concern is that if the Invega is working optimally to alleviate your son's symptoms you need to examine the risk of switching although I understand the side effect may not be welcome or well tolerated.  What has the doctor said about the body temperature problem?  Does it pose a threat to your son's health or is it something he can live with by taking precautions, like wearing a sweater if he is chilly?

The goal of taking any medication should be relief from a person's symptoms.  Unfortunately, the meds used to treat people cause side effects.

I hope you are able to find the best possible drug to help your son function well.  I can understand if the side effects are upsetting to him.  He should not have to live with a side effect for the rest of his life if it can be helped.

Regards,

Christina
